Driving on Dartmoor... a perfect day! |
MH had a birthday not too long ago and FH bought him a present that he has wanted for rather a long time. A driving lesson and drive in our family's favourite place - Dartmoor.
We will forgive the humans as it would seem that there is an ulterior motive, something about learning about harness and training for driving, they have designs on getting a certain Dragon a little cart....
The humans learnt from the 'master' a man that has forgotten more about horses and driving in his eight decades than most people will ever learn in a life time. A true pleasure and privilege.
The humans hope you don't mind us sharing a few pics with you; it was the drive of a lifetime and Dartmoor blessed them with good weather - not a frequent event in this part of the world!
The beautiful horse was called Pagent, Roller now has a crush on her, look at that beautiful mane! You know what sounded really nice? She loved her job and had a lovely time.... she made our humans very happy.
A lovely day was had by all, FH brought a souvenir home, look out for a post about some military mule memorabilia soon to come....
Very nice. Driving is fun, looks much nicer on Dartmore than around a city which is where human goes with driving boy.
ReplyDeleteIt was lovely! The humans have been bitten by the driving bug... who knows what's next!
DeleteLucky you driving out like that. It is so nice with such a willing horse and you had such good weather too. (That wasn't with Johnny Arden by any chance was it?) I think I recognise part of the drive across the end of a reservoir, Venford? I did a blog post on
ReplyDeleteWilliam's blog where we saw a 'little lost duck' here's the post:

we left the little chap and hope his family found him :)
You're absolutely right! It was fantastic and a pleasure to be taught by someone so wise in one of the most beautiful places on earth.... Hope the little duck made it back to water with his family :-)
DeleteBeautiful scenery, sounds like a more than wonderful way to spend a day
ReplyDeleteIt was perfect! A beautiful day in a beautiful place with some fantastic characters, oh I could do it all again.....
DeleteHow beautiful! Loved the video and the wonderful photos! Such a beautiful countryside.
ReplyDeleteThank you! We love looking at the scenery on everyone else's blogs too, it's nice to share a little bit of home around the world :)
DeleteWhat a special way to spend a birthday!. Enchanting landscape and views. With such a lovely gait and flowing mane, no wonder that Roller became smitten :-) But mind you, no beauty surpasses that of Pretty Callie!.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday, MH. Enjoy many slurps to come, headbutts, snuggles and neighbrays. I wonder, was your birthday cake by chance a carrot cake? ... ;-)
It was wonderful, Pagent the horse was beautiful but her ears were a little on the short side for us..... Roller however is in love with that pretty mane ;)
DeleteCarrot cake - yes what a wonderful idea, we could get MH a belated carrot cake and then eat most of it ourselves, we're sure he wouldn't mind!
Very nice! I think a certain Dragon would look quite splendid in a harness with a cart :)
ReplyDeleteWe think so too, she is demanding a lilac one like her bridle, we think not..... hmmmm! We have been inspired by you and Shy!
DeleteI used to drive with my old horse named Red. He took to it so easily, and the kids could in turn drive him. Our roads are not at all horse friendly, so I don't do it now.
ReplyDeleteI hope you all get to drive.
PS~I want to live there...it is so beautiful!
When the sun shines there are few places we'd rather be, on a rainy day it is not quite as welcoming but still home! Really loved the driving, maybe a new project.... why aren't there more hours in the day??
DeleteAh! Takes me back does that!...............(memories flooding back) Our milkman, long since dead! Used to deliver milk from a horse and cart, well into the 60`s! We lived on a hill, and he would stop at the bottom of the road, feed is horse, and then start the long climb up the hill. I always had some carrots and a bucket of Oats for the horse. My Mam used to chide me for getting too close to the old horse. But he never offered any effort to be other than gentle. I cant remember the horses name now, but he seemed huge, lots of feather on his legs, black and white, and with those blinkers on. He always was well treated by his owner, while he had a cup of tea and a slice of bacon and egg, the horse got that bucket of oats from me. In the winter of 62/63, the horse and the milk didnt get through for weeks! but when he eventually did, sometime in the March, it was a real treat to see him! We were almost the last place on its round, so we got time to pet him, it was a real shame when all the milko`s went over to electric vans.
ReplyDeleteLoved your memories of the milk man and his horse, such a gentler pace of life and I often wish things were more like that now. Hope you have sunshine at home so that you get out on horseback again!
DeleteThe dirty stop outs :-p
ReplyDeleteI have a cracking driving mule wasted in the field here, like Val our roads are not driving friendly. If you get very into your driving and want another mule give me a shout!
Don't tempt us..... that lovely mule of yours is just so gorgeous! How sad that the roads don't let you use her :( Send her neighbrays and a scratch from us all!
DeletePagent is gorgeous. It's lovely to hear about a happy horse enjoying her work. She certainly looks very happy.
ReplyDeleteAnd, of course, all the Muleteers are gorgeous. Maybe tiny carts for the boys and a pink cart for Dragon!? : - )
Love and snuffles from Judy in Cambridge
Oooo yes a pink cart, what a great idea! Roller says he'd give the cart thing a go, Mini happy to watch and carry on his true career as a lap mule :-) Sending you snuffles and neighbrays xxxx
DeleteThat first photo is fantastic, it almost feels like being in the cart. Speaking of, I want one. I think a couple of donkeys could pull that:)
