Sorry for the interruption in Muleteer ponderings, we've been battling the weather, again! The weather is not being kind to anyone it seems at the moment. We have had 100 mph winds and torrential rain to make this a pretty miserable winter. None of us have seen storms like it, yesterday we had enough rain to last a month and gales that brought down lots of trees and caused major flooding of the local coastline. We are thankful though. We Muleteers and friends live on sloped land which drains, we have a roof over our heads and our stables and house don't flood too much - we are great believers in the fact that the little house here hasn't stood for nearly 600 years without being fairly resistant to Mother Nature's worst.
Some of our friends have not been so lucky, we're sorry for them and wish for drying sunshine and abating floods so that they can repair their damage.
The roads have been looking more like rivers, the local river itself is a raging torrent and the storm drains are not really coping that well. This is called a buddlehole (strange Dartmoor language!) and is supposed to drain the lanes around here in to the farmer's fields next-door, it can only take so much though and the fields now look a little like swimming pools!
Some of us are not too fussed by the rain, the Cloth Dog has a lovely waterproof coat and is made for the wet, all he wants to know is where is his ball?
He can't seem to understand that it might get washed away. This is the water coming down one of our favourite lanes for a ride, rather ironically called 'Summer Lane'! This video was snapped by one of our friends, thank goodness she didn't have to drive up that lane!
We're hoping for a little sunshine today, come on Mother Nature we've all been extra good! In the meantime we have glimpsed a little ray of Spring - our Hebe is flowering, such a beautiful reminder that summery flowers and greenery are just around the corner for us all….. surely?!

ReplyDeleteI do feel for all the bad weather , rain , high winds you all are having over there. I can only image what flooded barns and home must be like to deal with , so much so fast. I think snow is actually so much easier to deal with than that much rain and wind. Glad you are all safe . Wishing for you better weather and hoping the lands there will dry out and absorb all that water , leaving you with a lovely lush Spring !

DeleteI was wondering about all of you with hearing the BBC report at night on the public radio about how bad things were in the UK.
ReplyDeleteWe get 'gully' washers like that too and live in an area that is full of hills and valleys. The valleys get it much worse than we do.
I hope things make a big turn for the better soon
I see we are bracing for some more storms here very soon.
Hope your storms aren't too bad, seems that we've all been struggling this winter, let's hope we have a nice Summer for enduring this winter!

DeleteEeek I don't like all that water. I am so pleased to hear you are all safe. I have been dancing the sunshine dance and getting all my friends to join in, there was about a minute of sunshine today before the rain started up again.

Oh what beautiful ponies in the sunshine, we are imagining that is us, the long ears amongst us especially who feel sure that the sand would be good for their coats, Roller would really like some snow!

Will this winter never end?! You are wise to trust in high ground and the test of time. I hope you get some sun and the awful storms let up. I think of you when I see pictures of your ravaged coast. It is good to know you are safe and well.
ReplyDeleteIt does feel like that doesn't it?! Winter must surely end soon.... today we had sunshine before the next day of torrential rain tomorrow, let's hope for more sunshine for us all soon.
DeleteThe hebe is beautiful, and a reminder that soon, spring will be here. I would be afraid to walk in the lane where the dogs went... fast water has always scared me. Glad you did not have scads of damage, and praying for your friends who did.
ReplyDeleteThe hebe certainly raised our spirits, it's such a hardy plant in our garden that gives colour throughout the year, it has even been known to flower in the snow. A real treat on such a rainy day!
