Just Say No to Cotton Wool!

Say yes to bananas!
Cotton wool is a big no no in our world!  It's fine for first aid emergencies but definitely not for wrapping us up in, thank you.  We were chatting to FH earlier about wrapping us up in cotton wool (animal or human-imal) and nope we just don't like it....

Our poor Pocket Labrador Friend has had a bit of a bump, oops he ran after his ball a bit too quick and is now hopping around on three legs, don't worry friends he is the indestructa-dog and the doggy doctor thinks he'll be fine.  But it got us to thinking about this and something else FH showed us recently.

Imagine our disgust when FH showed us a recent forum post saying that it was irresponsible and 'cruel' to feed your pony carrots and apples and whoa betide if you should let it have a banana!  What????  We were very perplexed.....  apparently feeding such treats is terrible and said equine will be struck down with serious laminitis and hoof pain.... errrmmm we think this person needs a little assistance with finding the equine nutrition books!  The scary thing was that loads of folks agreed...... for the love of mules, what's wrong with a little bit of something you like?  A tiny risk in your day?  To be honest we are all convinced that a carrot has as much sugar as a few blades of grass and unless fed in excess is not a problem.  The sad thing was that this person had taken their wish to care for their horse to the extreme and had lost a little perspective and was now encouraging other humans to do the same thing, their poor horses, life with no carrots - very sad!

Then we come on to the whole barefoot / shod thing.... Oh My Mule there are some feisty opinions out there.... we are very lucky that our feet don't need shoes but to tell people time and again that shoes or no shoes is almost cruel errrmmm we're a bit confused....

Say yes to galloping!
What about all that protective gear too?  FH admits she wears tons of fluorescent (much to the disdain of many of our local snooty brigade) on the road but then she doesn't have a death wish as we have some naughty drivers around.  What we don't get are wrapped in cotton wool with every surface covered with boots of every design possible just in case a thorn should jump out from the hedge, and no it's not because our FH doesn't love us, much as that's not the reason that we hardly ever wear rugs when it's freezing (Dragon gets one on before riding to stop her looking like such a bog monster).  We are even allowed out in the fields (which are very steep) when it is raining and a little slippy, FH closes her eyes when we run around but knows that we need to be free and enjoy life not be cooped up indoors 'just in case' we do something silly.

So that leads us back to the Pocket Sized Labrador... he hurt himself running for his ball.  Not too long ago an acquaintance of FH's told her that she shouldn't throw balls for our canine friend as he might injure himself. Well yes this is true but it might never have happened and guess what?  He was having the bestest time ever running after that naughty ball, it's what he lives for and loves.   And guess what, FH will still be throwing it for him when he's better.  His life would be that bit less fulfilled without it, so that's our aim - to get the labrador back to ball chasing fitness :-)

Say yes to chasing bunnies and balls!
Sometimes it's better in life to take the risk and live with the consequences than to not risk anything and not live life to its fullest, you're a long time dead!

Here's to bananas, gallops and chasing balls!

  1. Shy loves bananas (and peels)! I so give her apples, carrots, and other sugary treats on occasion, but I like to keep her sugar down as much as possible.
Really, when it comes to equine ownership, each to his or her own. I prefer barefoot. I do not wrap Shy in cotton wool. She lives outside. And she is thriving!

    1. We reckon Shy is a very lucky pony! Sounds like she has a bit of what she likes without too much, no wonder she's so pretty and healthy :-)

    1. We like galloping and balls too much! Our human is a bit mean on the treats front but cotton wool is definitely not allowed :-)

  3. LOL I frequent some of these forums, it can be very confusing finding a balance, but it is interesting to see how these ideas operate in practice. The proof is the evidence and happiness of healthy happily working equines or companions. How can FH get it wrong listening to all the wise equine wisdom and as for PSL while he recovers, hiding the ball and sniffing it out can be a good way of keeping busy and active with out so much joint strain (depending on his sniffer ability) Wilfords wish him well on his recovery, we too think that life is for living, enjoying and taking a few risks.... but please respect the fencing!!!

    1. That's so true, we love the forums but yikes you can believe that you're going to cause a problem doing just about anything.... Everything in moderation without being silly we reckon, one carrot not one hundred sounds fine to us ;-) Great idea about the ball, PSL will be pleased with that suggestion! Between you and us muleteers we are a little bit scared of our fencing... it clicks and stings so we tend to be very respectful!

  4. Wee yappy Mags is no longer allowed to run after a ball. She plays sniffer dog. Keeps yappy and the Grandfoal amused for hours.

Some humans seem to have a very odd behaviour. One we know thinks it's barbaric and cruel to have shoes on a horse but ok to ride that horse while it's lame. I have given up trying to understand humans. Weird creatures they are indeed.
They also seem to have the ability to demand of us equines things they don't do for themselves. Low sugar high fibre diets for us.....mcdonalds and cream cakes for them.

    1. You are very right (as always) Zoe! Those humans are right odd ones aren't they? Hmmm now then we must remind FH not to eat those cream cakes ;-)

  6. From Morris...I wore a sweater one time. I had it full of burrs in 3 minutes, bye bye sweater for dogs..hmpf. I don't wear booties either. When and if I get cold I look pitiful and then SHE picks me up. No rugs for the mules either, they think it is a game to rip it to shreds.

I also play hang frisbee. Kids pick me up and dangle me whilst I hang on to the frisbee. I'm 8 yrs old and have fantastic teeth. The vet man said so...

Hope Labrador is back to chasing balls soon.

    1. Morris is our doggy hero! This sounds like an excellent compromise, loads of fun and then cuddles when it all gets too much, clever Morris :-)

  7. How on earth do my four legged friends know if they have been good if they don't get a treat.... Imagine life without a carrot phew it's not worth thinking about. Our human has stopped me having ginger treats , she mumbled something about them making me naughty ( how rude is that ) but I sill get little bits of carrot. Our dog friend has bad hips too, but he is still allowed to chase a ball, human said its all about quality of life. Have to agree with her otherwise I might have my carrots stopped

    1. Life without carrots would be very sad indeed! We are only allowed them when we're good for training or as little hidden treats that we snuffle out but boy do they make life tasty and fun :-) Always good to agree with the humans, they think they're right, we know we're right ;-) xx
